I love to dance. To me there is nothing more physically expressive than dance. I think if you are messing around with the physical world, dance comes natural with expression. The musical rhythm locked in my ears and mind causes something inside of me to burst with excitement as I become more concentrated and delve deeper into a piece of mine. I choose to use my brush strokes, my scratch marks, my additions and subtractions as an extension of my dance. I will dance and feel out my surroundings to create a piece that has its own unique dance.
When I start my process I don’t have a specific goal in mind. I have no plan, no rhyme or reason to what I do. It’s not about the thought put into the work that makes it what it is. I care more about the process. The physical altercation I have with the surface over a prolonged period of time is the work. This process, or dance, is all there is to it. I attempt to let go of my logic and reason to let the emotion and dance take me where it wants to go. Ideally the more subtle nuances are not lost in the size or color of each piece. In the end I want to create play between the physical and visual with these two locked into a dance on canvas for the viewer to find.
Each piece has its own dance with itself in my eyes. This dance is very fluid and takes on many forms and shapes until it is finished. This dance is related to the textures and colors that I am invested in exploring. The textures are meant to compliment and contrast the colors in hopes to maintain a sense of balance. I get very interested in each piece in the journey it takes to get where it is. This has helped me realize the most important thing in my work, and my life, is the journey itself, not the destination. Do you walk or run to your destination; for me? I dance.
